January 19, 2020 Comment to NYT’s columnist Maureen Dowd

DHC | Hillcrest, CA

I almost gave up on Ms Dowd after last weekend’s column, having been a fan for years. I’m happy I hung in there for this weekend’s column, though. It is difficult for me to even read Mr Starr’s name, much less witness him being thrust back into another Impeachment trial. A more despicable, morally compromised man cannot be found in the country. Then add Dershowitz into the sordid mix and we have, oh yes, Trump to thank, yet another poisoned pill who is intent on debasing and degrading our country to the point where it will take a generation of hot showers to wash off the stink and lies forced upon America by jowly white men who cannot fathom giving up power, cannot imagine not being in the news, their mugshots about to be displayed, once again, on the bedraggled American soul as the trial begins, the trials they cannot end.

Trump has turned the Presidency into a vile and reprehensible reality TV show and as a result, our country, my country, where I was born 64 years ago, has turned into a mockery of the nation I once knew. Born in 1955, I have now lived through three of the four Presidential impeachments. Make of that what you will. But this President is so lacking in morals and standards of decency and is so wrapped up in misogyny that I fail to see how we will ever recover. Trump is a sniveling coward who gets his revenge on Twitter and in front of hand-picked supporters. He wouldn’t last 10 minutes on the battlefields that this country has fought for ourselves and our allies. He doesn’t know what a diplomat is. His Tweeting from inside the safe walls of the White House, besmirching Ambassador Yovanovitch who has dedicated her life to diplomacy, for this country, is in itself reason to have him removed from office. For the sake of brevity, I will not further comment on the Republican sycophants who lap his verbiage up like warm milk except to say that they too should be removed from office.

Russia has something(s) on Trump and always has. They have something on Graham and the rest of the Republican leadership. Trump has turned over Syria and Turkey foreign policy to the Russians. Where will it end? I never imagined my country would be destroyed by a reality tv personality and a bankrupt businessman. I will soon be 65 yo and I don’t know what to do about any of it.

“JUDY”

“JUDY”

Renee Zellweger owned her portrayal of Judy Garland. I could not take my eyes off her. She belted out the tunes herself. The scenes with her two fans, who comfort her in the beginning of the movie and help save her at the end, are stunning.

These days, with streaming and episode drops once a week, it is a pleasure to watch a two hour movie that grabs the heart, holds the heart, and releases the heart ~~ in the end.

Impeachment

There is a large, shell-shocked constituency in the country (I count myself as one) that has been paralyzed by Trump’s behavior, a constituency that now will feel like Pelosi popped the cork on compressed rage & anxiety and released the stagnant, mind-numbing pressure of living in our country and watching Trump, day after day, demean and destroy our values and institutions, piece by piece.

That’s how I feel, anyway.

Fosse/Verdon ~~ Sam Rockwell/Michelle Williams

Michelle Williams and Sam Rockwell made my toes vibrate, my fingers play rocking chair arms piano keys. They carried me with them through the performances, my misplaced tap shoes keeping the beat in my feet.

Happy wedding anniversary to my husband, Luke, and to me, married in the “Summer of Love” in San Diego, California, on 08/09/08. 11 years married, coming up on 36 years together come November 15.

Love and laughter, with a bunch of hot and sexy, that’s what it is, that’s what it has been. Oh, it gets better every day.

One of the most striking moments in a 1993 interview between Charlie Rose and Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist Toni Morrison is when she says to the PBS anchor, “Imagine raising your children to despise other people.” She is soft, but stern in her delivery. In a sweeping interview about her 1992 book, Jazz, Morrison’s words feel tragically familiar 26 years later in a country still broken by racism, white supremacy, and violence.

Tuesday, August 6th, 2019

“If I take your race away, and there you are, all strung out. And all you got is your little self, and what is that? What are you without racism? Are you any good? Are you still strong? Are you still smart? Do you still like yourself? I mean, these are the questions. Part of it is, “yes, the victim. How terrible it’s been for black people.” I’m not a victim. I refuse to be one… if you can only be tall because somebody is on their knees, then you have a serious problem. And my feeling is that white people have a very, very serious problem and they should start thinking about what they can do about it. Take me out of it.”

NYTimes comment on Trump Impeachment

Friday, July 26th, 2019

Two Points: (1) Mueller clearly stated that Russian influence into our elections has happened and is happening now, today. Mueller’s “lackluster” appearance, as described by the Times, is an embarrassment to my subscription to your paper of record. Mueller is doing his job. I am fatigued with all the word play in the Times and other outlets like NPR, who are accepting impeachable offenses as if this President and his presidency were a reality show. Oh, wait. (2) If a President ever needed to be impeached, it is Trump. For the country’s sake, fellow Americans, he must be called to account for his lies, his historic repudiation of the Constitution and our laws and our country’s solvency. I say pay no attention to the political fallout for holding this man accountable. If Trump cannot be impeached, then what President can? And when? And why?

RIP my long ago friend.

You turned me on to good hair our senior year of high school in Roanoke. You helped me survive my one and only year at Hampden-Sydney College, ‘73 - ‘74. I had a little crush on you, didn’t we all. The night we cut the power to our dorm at H-S before finals was both our high and higher point, especially since after our buzz wore off we turned the power back on and woke up all the guys to tell them if they didn’t hurry, they would be late for their finals.

Don’t know yet what took you out of here, just heard about your death a few hours ago from our friend Jean.

Where did all the time go.

UPDATE: Sunday

I read your obit today. Sounds like you had a good life with your family and friends. Cheers!
